Job Shadowing

Job Shadowing

Article by Susan Bagyura

All too frequently when people think about starting a business,it’s one that they have no experience in working or running. Whether it’s an old dream or just a frivolous whim, it’s become quite common to see someone starting up a restaurant, bed & breakfast, and many other types of businesses without any experience, knowledge or idea of what it’s like to even work in such an establishment.

Starting a business can be fraught with risk even when the owner is experienced within the field or industry but there are many more consequences to consider when starting a business without any basic knowledge and experience. For example, someone could be a great plumber or architect, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they will run a successful business. In other words, having the ability to run a business is more than just being able to do the main work of the business.

One of the big traps for new business owners is getting stuck in the rut of trying to do the business and run the business at the same time. At some point, something has got to give. In today’s world, the more successful business owner is the one that focuses on running the business that has reliable, competent staff performing the work of the business.

I love watching Gordon Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares TV show because both sides of the spectrum are shown. One show may be about someone that’s a great chef who has started their own restaurant. This chef will be back in the kitchen cooking, but they can’t handle the staffing issues, ordering inventory, making a profit, marketing to get the customers into the restaurant, etc. so before long, they don’t even enjoy cooking anymore.

Then the next show may be about someone that has never worked in a restaurant, doesn’t know a thing about buying, storing, and cooking food, but they own the restaurant and are relying on the staff to make it run smoothly and profitably. Most likely if the staff was capable of running a business; they would already own a business. They have this dream of being rich and famous for owning a successful restaurant, but they don’t know the first thing about the critical details of running a restaurant.

So how does someone bridge the gap between where they are and their dream business? How can you really be sure that this is right for you? One highly recommended activity is job shadowing. This enables a person to spend some time observing a professional on the job to determine whether or not it’s something that they would be willing to do on a full time or long term basis. This is a great way to test out different entrepreneurial ventures to see which one would be a good fit for you.

Another suggestion before starting a business, which requires a substantial investment of time and money; is to take some assessments and see if you are the person that’s cut out to be a business owner. For example, running a business often requires an investment of long hours and working on the weekends. Is that something that you are willing to do? Clearly understand what’s involved and then compare it to the commitments you are willing to make.

Another option would be to do what is called vocation vacations. This enables a person to test out a variety of jobs/businesses from a wedding coordinator to radio announcer for 2 to 3 days to see if it suits them. A lot of people for a variety of reasons may not want to do an apprenticeship, but they do want to know if their dream is the right one for them. Vocation vacations gives a person a chance to work side by side with an owner of their ‘dream business’ to see if it really is a dream or a nightmare.

The beauty of this option is that a person doesn’t need to quit their job or invest any money beyond their mentorship and vacation expenses, but they gain huge benefits in having a firsthand chance to ask questions about the ups and downs of owning the business while experiencing exactly what happens on a day to day basis in that particular business. Just like test driving an expensive car before buying it; this allows a person to test drive a business and combine it with a regular vacation.

Whatever you decide to do in life, whether it’s starting a business, building a career or working in a job; find something that is fulfilling, makes you happy and that you love doing. When you have that, you have everything.

Reid confident ahead of Dubai

Reid confident ahead of Dubai

Article by Fiona18

England’s Melissa Reid is feeling confident ahead of the Ladies European Tour’s season-ending Omega Dubai Ladies Masters which starts at Emirates Nike – VR Pro Blade Irons Club today. The European Solheim Cup player is returning from a six-week break and has been working intensely with her coach, Dave Ridley, in Dubai. She said on Tuesday: “The last few days with my coach have gone well; better than expected, because I had a few weeks off.”So I’m feeling I’m actually swinging it probably the best I’ve swung it all year. I’m actually feeling pretty good going into this week. I might be a little bit rusty because I’ve not played a tournament in six weeks, but yeah, my actual preparation the last few days has been very good, so hopefully we can play Nike – VR Pro Blade Irons well.”The 24-year-old from Derby finished third at the 2010 event and has enjoyed two wins this year, in Holland and Spain, plus nine additional top ten finishes from 19 starts on the Ladies European Tour. She is currently ranked second on the Tour’s 2011 Henderson Money List and cannot catch top ranked Ai Miyazato but will need a strong finish to hold off Swedish rookie sensation Caroline Headwall.Just €12,183 separates the two players but Reid insisted that she is not feeling pressurized, despite Headwall winning her fourth title of the season in India on Sunday.”I’ve kind of achieved everything that I wanted to and now I know that I can’t win the money list because I can’t catch Ai, this week I can really just focus on my own Nike – VR Pro Blade Irons and really enjoy this tournament.”It’s great for us to play Nike – VR Pro Blade Irons in such a strong field and I think this tournament has grown a lot in the last few years.”Obviously I would love to be winning the Order of Merit, but yeah, I would say I’m a very consistent player. I think last year I had nine top 10s, or ten top 10s as well. I mean I do play very consistently, but you know, you always get somebody in a year that wins four or five times, and Lee-Anne (Pace) did it last year, Laura did it, and this year it’s been Caroline, so unless you do that, you’re not going to win the money list.”On Headwall’s performances, she added: “She’s had a fantastic year. She’s won four times, and you know, at the end of the day it’s not really going to make that much difference who finishes second or who finishes third. We’ve both had very good seasons, and like I said, if she finishes second or wins this week or plays Nike – VR Pro Blade Ironsvery well this week, then fair play to her. She’s had an incredible season, and she really deserves to be up there. But either way, we’re both going to finish second or third, so that’s a pretty good season.”Headwall is looking to upstage Reid and says that she thrives under pressure.Italian Diana Luna, a two-time winner on tour this year (in Germany and Switzerland) is currently €61,673 behind Reid and needs to finish second or better to have a chance of taking the number two spot, however she is the only other player who can move into second on the ranking. There are seven of Europe’s victorious Solheim Cup players in the field including Headwall, Reid, Laura Davies, Sophie Gustafson, Christel Boeljon, Anna Nordqvist and Sandra Gal.( Nike – VR Pro Blade Irons)They are joined by United States Solheim Cup players Michelle Wie and Christina Kim, as well as their 16-year-old compatriot Lexi Thompson, who claimed her maiden victory as a professional at the Navistar LPGA Classic in September. With two top-five finishes in the event, including a tie for second in 2009, England’s Davies will also be looking to make her mark after a lack-lustre season. She missed the cut last week when defending her Nike – VR Pro Blade Irons at the Hero Women’s Indian Open after her caddie’s arrival was delayed due to visa problems. During the first round she decided to push her own trolley for the first time in her 26-year career and shot three over par.She wasn’t able to recover, even after her regular caddie, Scotsman Johnny Scott, arrived on Saturday, but insists that she is playing Nike – VR Pro Blade Irons better than last year tee to green. She added that the greens are immaculate and compared them amongst the best she had ever played on.

Korean Food: Jja-jang Bob (짜장밥)

Jja-jang Bob (짜장밥) is the most popular Korean style chinese food in Korea. This is made of mainly black bean paste, meat, and different kinds of vegetables. In Korea, you can easily order Jja-jang meon (Black bean paste noodle) from the Chinese restaurants. Then they will deliver the food to your house only for 3 or 4 dollars without any tipping. Typically, Korean style chinese restaurants serve Jja-jang meon with Pickled yellow radish (Dan-moo-ji), radish kimchi (Kkak doo gi), and raw onion with black bean paste which you will use to make this recipe. Dip the onion into the black bean paste when you eat Jja-jang bob or noodles. Garnish with cucumber or peas. Cucumber tastes especially good with this Jja-jang bob.
